Story

Our Story

The rapid transformation of the last forty years or more in Kuwait has endangered the continuity of many traditional skills, which for centuries produced many items of vibrant beauty and social function . In response to this threat an effort was launched in 1979 by a group of concerned Kuwaitis in the form of a special project called Al Sadu which denotes amongst the Bedouin both the art of weaving as well as the loom itself. The main aim of the project was to preserve, promote and revive the traditional craft of weaving and related textile arts, through scholarly documentation and the propagation of knowledge about them and their appreciation as an art form. In 1991, the project was transformed into a self-sustained weaving cooperative, with shares owned by the weavers, and an emphasis on production and development.

What we do

Beit alSadu ,the weaving Cooperative is mainly concerned with keeping alive this rich cultural textile heritage and weaving traditions through:

1- art and craft education

2- promotion and innovations in product design in textiles

Our vision

can be summarized in two words; preservation and inspiration. We work out of a concern to protect and salvage the remaining hand skills and traditions related to traditional textile weaving in Kuwait. We do that with a passion to celebrate the evolving role of crafts in general as strong cultural symbols and their potential development as contemporary forms of inspiration and creative expression.

Why support us?

Cultural projects, such as the AlSadu weaving cooperative Society , Beit alSadu , builds and contributes to the cultural understanding of traditional textile weaving in Kuwait as both social heritage and identity , and therefore plays a major role as a community gathering place and force for intercultural understanding and communication.

We ask the community to support us because we are making an effort into preserving an important part of our culture. AlSadu and the Bisht cloth , are weaving crafts which convey the nomadic and urban people’s cultural heritage in Kuwait and the Arabian Peninsula, especially the upper Gulf region . These crafts and their social cultural and aesthetics add a lot to the understanding of the cultural heritage of Kuwait , its social identity and future development .

Timeline

The plan is to implement our objectives efficiently through the upgrading of the following :

1- The design process related to innovative textile products .

2- The art education program

3- The digital documentation and classification of our permanent textile collection to better serve as a design archives and reference data base .

4- The revitalization of the marketing strategy ; the (Dukkan) or shop ,as a showcase of handcrafted works and local skills , and the sales mechanism , in order to generate more financial support to the local weavers and artisans behind this initiative.

2- Limited Edition Bags

Risk & Challenge

A possible challenge would be not having enough customers for the textile products, and that would cause a problem in generating sufficient financial support to the artisans and weavers. We plan to overcome this by focusing in incorporating modern art with traditional ways of weaving top create contemporary pieces that will please today's customers.
